模具的失效分为非反常失效和反常失效。

非反常失效(早期失效)是指模具未到达必定的工业水平下公认的寿命时就不能退役。

早期失效的方式有塑性变形、断裂、部分重大磨损等。

反常失效是指模具经大量量消费经常使用,因缓慢塑性变形或较平均地磨损或疲劳断裂而不能继续退役。

模具反常失效前,消费出的合格产品的数目,叫模具反常寿命,简称模具寿命,模具初次修复前消费出的合格产品的数目,叫初次寿命;模具一次性修复后到下一次性修复前所消费出的合格产品的数目,叫修模寿命。

模具寿命是初次寿命与各次修复寿命的总和。
